One of our most popular cosmetic surgeries, breast augmentation, is used to increase the fullness and projection of the breasts. This surgery can also be used to restore breast volume after changes caused by age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations.
However, breast augmentation surgery alone cannot correct droopy breasts. Many people pair breast implant surgery with a breast lift to address droopy or sagging breasts while maintaining or enhancing the volume of the bust.
Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
- People who feel that their breasts are too small or who want to enhance the contour of their body
- People who have had a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss
- People with asymmetrical breasts who want an enhanced figure

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
During your consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Y. Anthony Nakamura, we will discuss your expectations for enhancing your appearance. He will give you a basic understanding of the procedure and the results that you can expect. You will also talk about your health history, implant preference, the risks and limitations of the breast augmentation procedure, your incision type, placement location, and recovery.
You will also have the opportunity to ask any additional questions that you may have about your breast implants. You can decide to tour our accredited surgery center so that you can be comfortable with where your surgery will be performed. Our patient care coordinator will give you pricing information for the procedure decisions you have chosen and discuss financing options if you are interested.
Your Breast Augmentation Incision
The ideal incision pattern according to Dr. Nakamura is the inframammary incision, which is made in the crease under your breast. This inconspicuous incision heals nicely and minimizes visible scarring. After your procedure is completed, you will be placed in a post-surgical bra, which helps minimize swelling and supports your breast tissue as you heal. You may wear a sports bra after one week.
Types of Breast Implants
Your breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and body type, as well as your goals from surgery will determine your ideal breast implant type. During the surgery, silicone shells filled with either saline (sterile salt water) or silicone gel are added to your own natural breast tissue to create a larger and fuller breast size. The implant is inserted into the pocket created, either under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue.
Saline implants have some advantages in terms of minimizing the length and visibility of the scar, as they can be inserted prior to being filled. However, silicone implants are often desired due to the more natural look and feel they have compared to natural breast tissue. Whether silicone breast implants or saline breast implants are better for your unique situation will be discussed during your consultation visit with Dr. Nakamura.
Anesthesia
For your comfort and safety, Dr. Nakamura always recommends people undergo breast augmentation through general anesthesia. The procedure itself will take approximately one hour. You will have medication prescribed to keep you comfortable after surgery.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation Surgery
After surgery, you will go to our plastic surgery recovery room for at least an hour. Your caregiver will be waiting for you and will be given instructions on how to care for you in your initial post-operative period. You will be able to go home with your caregiver after you are released from our recovery room.
After a week, you will come back for your first follow-up visit with Dr. Nakamura. Depending on your occupation, most patients are able to return to work within one week of surgery. During your post-op visits, you will be advised when you can begin exercising and daily activities.
